BACKGROUND: Upper and lower extremity muscle strength can be used to predict health outcomes. However, the difference between the relation of upper extremity muscle and of lower extremity muscle with physiological factors is unclear. This study aimed to evaluate the association between physiological data and muscle strength, measured using grip and leg extension strength, among Japanese adults. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional study of 2,861 men and 6,717 women aged ≥ 20 years living in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. Grip strength was measured using a dynamometer. Leg extension strength was measured using a hydraulic isokinetic leg press machine. Anthropometry and physiological data, including blood pressure, calcaneal ultrasound bone status, pulmonary function, carotid echography, and blood information, were assessed. We used a general linear model adjusted for age, body composition, and smoking status to evaluate the association between muscle strength and physiological factors. RESULTS: Grip and leg extension strength were positively associated with bone area ratio, vital capacity, forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume in one second, and estimated glomerular filtration rate, and negatively associated with waist circumference and percentage body fat mass in both the sexes. Diastolic blood pressure was positively associated with grip strength in both the sexes and leg extension strength in men, but not women. High-density lipoprotein cholesterol and red blood cell counts were positively associated with grip and leg extension strength in women, but not men. In both the sexes, pulse rate, total cholesterol, and uric acid were consistently associated with only leg extension strength, but not grip strength. In women, glycated hemoglobin demonstrated negative and positive associations with grip and leg extension strength, respectively. CONCLUSIONS: Grip and leg extension strength demonstrated similar associations with anthropometry, pulmonary function, and estimated glomerular filtration rate, but the associations with the other factors were not always consistent.

PURPOSE: The previous studies that examined the effectiveness of unsupervised machine learning methods versus traditional methods in assessing dietary patterns and their association with incident hypertension showed contradictory results. Consequently, our aim is to explore the correlation between the incidence of hypertension and overall dietary patterns that were extracted using unsupervised machine learning techniques. METHODS: Data were obtained from Japanese male participants enrolled in a prospective cohort study between August 2008 and August 2010. A final dataset of 447 male participants was used for analysis. Dimension reduction using uniform manifold approximation and projection (UMAP) and subsequent K-means clustering was used to derive dietary patterns. In addition, multivariable logistic regression was used to evaluate the association between dietary patterns and the incidence of hypertension. RESULTS: We identified four dietary patterns: 'Low-protein/fiber High-sugar,' 'Dairy/vegetable-based,' 'Meat-based,' and 'Seafood and Alcohol.' Compared with 'Seafood and Alcohol' as a reference, the protective dietary patterns for hypertension were 'Dairy/vegetable-based' (OR 0.39, 95% CI 0.19-0.80, P = 0.013) and the 'Meat-based' (OR 0.37, 95% CI 0.16-0.86, P = 0.022) after adjusting for potential confounding factors, including age, body mass index, smoking, education, physical activity, dyslipidemia, and diabetes. An age-matched sensitivity analysis confirmed this finding. CONCLUSION: This study finds that relative to the 'Seafood and Alcohol' pattern, the 'Dairy/vegetable-based' and 'Meat-based' dietary patterns are associated with a lower risk of hypertension among men.

In contemporary global society, largely because of climate change and other natural and human-induced hazards, disasters are an almost daily occurrence. The nutritional impact of disasters on children results in long-term physical and mental health problems. As children are one of the most vulnerable demographic groups, they must be empowered with disaster preparedness nutrition knowledge, and the skills and motivation to survive, prevent/reduce malnutrition, and maintain good health during disasters. A disaster preparedness nutrition education program (DPNEP) was developed in this study to improve children's nutrition in daily life and during disasters through student-centered education. A consultative approach was used to synthesize the knowledge of a diverse group of four experts in disaster medicine and management, public health, education, and food and nutrition sciences to reach a consensus through discussion. A model DPNEP was developed by targeting grade 4 and 5 students and using interactive teaching methods. This can lead to the implementation of continuous nutrition education to empower children to make healthy food choices in daily life and reduce the risk of disaster-nutrition-related morbidity and mortality. Furthermore, once children acquire the necessary information, they are likely to share this knowledge with their families and communities, thereby enhancing society's resilience.

Children's food choices affect their nutritional health, development, and well-being. In Nigeria, school lunch is generally unregulated; the food menu is usually at the discretion of individual vendors forcing pupils to make unsupervised food choices. This study examined the effectiveness of 6-week nutrition education in enhancing pupils' knowledge and attitude on the school mid-day meal choices in Ibadan, Nigeria. A pre-test/post-test, quasi-experimental study was conducted with 100 pupils in 4th and 5th grades in public primary schools. Multistage sampling was used to select the participants. A nutrition education module and a questionnaire were used to collect the data. Frequency counts and t-test were used for statistical analysis. Findings revealed the following dietary pattern: 44 of the pupils preferred junk food (mean 41.5, SD = 12.9), 37 were inclined toward protein-rich food (mean 37.7, SD = 12.5), 32 favored food items dense in carbohydrates (mean 34.4, SD = 9.5), and 11 showed a preference toward food with high vitamins and minerals (mean 28.4, SD = 7.5). Nutrition knowledge (t = 6.4, df = 99, p < .05); (pre-test: X¯ = 20.9 and SD = 1.0; post-test: X¯ = 22.8, SD = 2.8) and attitude toward choice of meal showed statistically significant differences (t = 4.9, df = 99, p < .05; pre-test: X¯ = 13.5 and SD = 6.8; post-test: X¯ = 18.2, SD = 7.2). We recommend that the Ministry of Education should prepare a standard lunch menu for all schools and the school authorities should enforce it through the schools' food vendors.

Skeletal muscle maintenance depends largely on muscle stem cells (satellite cells) that supply myoblasts required for muscle regeneration and growth. The ubiquitin-proteasome system is the major intracellular protein degradation pathway. We previously reported that proteasome dysfunction in skeletal muscle significantly impairs muscle growth and development. Furthermore, the inhibition of aminopeptidase, a proteolytic enzyme that removes amino acids from the termini of peptides derived from proteasomal proteolysis, impairs the proliferation and differentiation ability of C2C12 myoblasts. However, no evidence has been reported on the role of aminopeptidases with different substrate specificities on myogenesis. In this study, therefore, we investigated whether the knockdown of aminopeptidases in differentiating C2C12 myoblasts affects myogenesis. The knockdown of the X-prolyl aminopeptidase 1, aspartyl aminopeptidase, leucyl-cystinyl aminopeptidase, methionyl aminopeptidase 1, methionyl aminopeptidase 2, puromycine-sensitive aminopeptidase, and arginyl aminopeptidase like 1 gene in C2C12 myoblasts resulted in defective myogenic differentiation. Surprisingly, the knockdown of leucine aminopeptidase 3 (LAP3) in C2C12 myoblasts promoted myogenic differentiation. We also found that suppression of LAP3 expression in C2C12 myoblasts resulted in the inhibition of proteasomal proteolysis, decreased intracellular branched-chain amino acid levels, and enhanced mTORC2-mediated AKT phosphorylation (S473). Furthermore, phosphorylated AKT induced the translocation of TFE3 from the nucleus to the cytoplasm, promoting myogenic differentiation through increased expression of myogenin. Overall, our study highlights the association of aminopeptidases with myogenic differentiation.

Lactate serves as the major glucose alternative to an energy substrate in the brain. Lactate level is increased in the fetal brain from the middle stage of gestation, indicating the involvement of lactate in brain development and neuronal differentiation. Recent reports show that lactate functions as a signaling molecule to regulate gene expression and protein stability. However, the roles of lactate signaling in neuronal cells remain unknown. Here, we showed that lactate promotes the all stages of neuronal differentiation of SH-SY5Y and Neuro2A, human and mouse neuroblastoma cell lines, characterized by increased neuronal marker expression and the rates of neurites extension. Transcriptomics revealed many lactate-responsive genes sets such as SPARCL1 in SH-SY5Y, Neuro2A, and primary embryonic mouse neuronal cells. The effects of lactate on neuronal function were mainly mediated through monocarboxylate transporters 1 (MCT1). We found that NDRG family member 3 (NDRG3), a lactate-binding protein, was highly expressed and stabilized by lactate treatment during neuronal differentiation. Combinative RNA-seq of SH-SY5Y with lactate treatment and NDRG3 knockdown shows that the promotive effects of lactate on neural differentiation are regulated through NDRG3-dependent and independent manners. Moreover, we identified TEA domain family member 1 (TEAD1) and ETS-related transcription factor 4 (ELF4) are the specific transcription factors that are regulated by both lactate and NDRG3 in neuronal differentiation. TEAD1 and ELF4 differently affect the expression of neuronal marker genes in SH-SY5Y cells. These results highlight the biological roles of extracellular and intracellular lactate as a critical signaling molecule that modifies neuronal differentiation.

Otitis media, one of the most common childhood diseases, is characterized by inflammation or infection of the middle ear. Due to their ease of access, daily probiotics are recommended for the prevention of early childhood otitis media. This study aimed to assess the impact of probiotics on the incidence of otitis media using a dataset (n = 95,380) from the Japan Environment and Children's Study, a nationwide birth cohort study. After multiple imputations, the association between the incidence of otitis media in early childhood and the daily frequency of yogurt intake in children and mothers was examined using a generalized linear model after adjusting for several confounders. Repeated incidence of otitis media during the 2 years after birth was found in 14,874 participants (15.6%). Based on participants with the lowest frequency of yogurt intake ("almost never") as the reference group, risk ratios for otitis media incidence decreased with higher frequencies of yogurt intake in children at one year of age, but also independently in mothers during pregnancy. The lowest risk ratio (95% confidence interval) for otitis media incidence at six months of age was observed with the most frequent yogurt intake (once/day or more) (0.54 [0.46-0.63]). Additionally, although a similar association was observed in the subgroup of those with cleft lip and/or palate (CL/P), a high-risk group for severe recurrent otitis media, no statistical significance was observed. Thus, increased regular yogurt intake in both children and mothers was associated with a decrease of otitis media during early childhood.

Skeletal muscle fiber type specification is changeable during muscle regeneration following cardiotoxin (CTX) injection; however, the mechanism of muscle fiber shift in regenerating muscle fibers remains unclear. Furthermore, it is unclear as to which factors determine skeletal muscle fiber types in regenerating muscle fibers. Previous studies showed that CTX-induced muscle damage resulted in a temporary hypoxic condition, indicating that hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF)-1α may be involved in muscle fiber type transition. Stabilization of HIF-1α has been shown to result in muscle fiber type transition toward slow-twitch phenotype through the calcineurin/nuclear factor activated T cell 1 (NFATc1) signaling pathway. Therefore, the aim of the present study was to determine whether the calcineurin/NFATc1 pathway is a key mediator of skeletal muscle fiber type transition during muscle regeneration. We found that CTX-induced muscle damage resulted in transient ischemia and HIF-1α expression in skeletal muscle. Additionally, it shifted the muscle fiber type proportion toward a slow-twitch phenotype in the soleus muscle (37.5% in the control muscle vs. 61.3% in the damaged muscle; p < 0.01) three weeks after muscle damage. Moreover, the NFATc1 protein levels increased in damaged muscle, and blockage of the calcineurin/NFATc1 signaling pathway by tacrolimus (FK-506) treatment substantially decreased the number of slow-twitch muscle fibers in the soleus muscle. This study demonstrated that CTX-induced muscle injury results in transient ischemia in hind limb muscle and stabilizes HIF-1α. Moreover, muscle damage increased oxidative phenotype muscle fibers through the calcineurin/NFATc1 signaling pathway during muscle regeneration.

BACKGROUND: The prone plank test has been often used to assess the strength and endurance of trunk muscles. We aimed to develop a new measurement protocol to objectively monitor the changes in spinal curves and muscle activity simultaneously. METHODS: Eleven adolescent male basketball athletes (13-17 years) performed a one-minute plank test. Spinal curvatures (thoracic kyphosis (TK) and lumbar lordosis (LL)) were determined at each time point by optical tracking of markers placed on the spinous processes of 10 vertebrae. Eleven muscles were measured by surface electromyography to determine muscle fatigue via changes in median frequency. RESULTS: TK significantly increased (p = 0.003) from the first to the last 10 s of the plank test; changes in LL were mixed within the group. Only the rectus abdominis showed consistent and significant fatigue (p < 0.001). The increased spinal curves significantly correlated with the fatigue of biceps femoris (TK: r = -0.75, p = 0.012; LL: r = -0.71, p = 0.019) indicating a compensatory muscle activation and spinal curve changes in response to fatigue. CONCLUSION: Our protocol may support future researches that aim to objectively evaluate the prone plank test and which posture-related muscles need strengthening for the individual.

Muscle contractile activity stimulates intramuscular recruitment of immune cells including neutrophils emerging to serve as a prerequisite for exerting proper muscular performance, although the underlying mechanisms and their contributions to myokine upregulation remain ill-defined. We previously reported that pharmacological inhibition of CX3CR1, a fractalkine receptor, dampens gnawing-dependent neutrophil recruitment into masseter muscles along with compromising their masticatory activity. By using a running exercise model, we herein demonstrated that hindlimb muscles require collaborative actions of both CX3CR1- and CXCR2-mediated signals for achieving neutrophil recruitment, upregulation of myokines including interleukin (IL)-6, enhanced GLUT4 translocation, and adequate endurance capability. Mechanistically, we revealed that a combination of CX3CR1 and CXCR2 antagonists, i.e., AZD8797 and SB2205002, inhibits exercise-inducible ICAM-1 and fractalkine upregulations in the area of the endothelium and muscle-derived CXCL1 upregulation, both of which apparently contribute to the intramuscular neutrophil accumulation in working muscles. Intriguingly, we also observed that 2 h of running results in intramuscular augmentation of innate lymphoid type 2 cells (ILC2s) markers, i.e., Bcl11b mRNA levels and anti-GATA-3-antibody-positive signals, and that these effects are completely abolished by administration of the combination of CX3CR1 and CXCR2 antagonists. Taken together, our findings strongly suggest that the exercise-evoked regional interplay among working myofibers, the adjacent endothelium, and recruited immune cells including neutrophils and possibly ILC2s, mediated through these local factors, plays a key role in the organization of the intramuscular microenvironment supporting the performance of hindlimb muscles during running.NEW & NOTEWORTHY This study provides compelling evidence that running-dependent intramuscular neutrophil recruitment requires both CX3CR1- and CXCR2-mediated signals that prime not only myofiber-derived myokine upregulations but also endothelium ICAM-1 and fractalkine expressions. The results revealed the importance of the exercise-evoked regional interplay among working myofibers, the adjacent endothelium, and recruited immune cells, including neutrophils and possibly ILC2s, which plays a key role in the organization of the intramuscular microenvironment supporting the performance of hindlimb muscles during running.

BACKGROUND: Knee is the most commonly injured part of the body in young athletes. Knee pain in several studies have been seen to be more prevalent in active adolescents compared to inactive, although common in both groups. Nevertheless, few studies with large sample size have been published reporting the difference of the prevalence of knee pain for each sport among young sports players. This study investigated the point prevalence of knee pain among young sports players aged 6-15 years old according to age, sex, and sports discipline. Furthermore, this study investigated the association between knee pain and sports discipline among young sports players. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted using a self-reported questionnaire on young sports players aged 6-15 years from the Miyagi Amateur Sports Association. Multivariable logistic regression models were used to examine the association between knee pain and sports discipline and were adjusted for age, sex, body mass index (BMI), training days per week, and training hours per weekday and weekend. RESULTS: A total of 7234 young sports players were included. The point prevalence of knee pain was 10.9%. Females (13.3%) had more knee pain than males (9.8%). Young, 13-year-old sports players had the highest prevalence of knee pain (19.1%). The multivariable analysis showed that the highest odds ratio [95% confidence interval] was observed for handball players (2.42 [1.01-5.81]). In addition, hand ball, mini-basketball (odds ratio 1.85; 95% CI 1.38-2.47), and basketball (odds ratio 1.66; 95% CI 1.23-2.26) were significantly associated with knee pain, compared with football. The lowest odds ratio was observed for swimming (0.34 [0.05-2.54]), followed by karate (odds ratio 0.38; 95% CI 0.16-0.89) and baseball (odds ratio 0.47; 95% CI 0.35-0.64). CONCLUSION: The prevalence of knee pain among young athletes differed according to age, sex, and sports discipline. Their parents and clinicians should recognize this information to manage knee pain among young sports players.

Adequate physical activity during pregnancy is crucial for maternal and fetal health. Although physical activity during pregnancy is restricted, social support and trust may have a favorable influence on physical activity. This study aimed to examine the association between cognitive social capital during pregnancy and prenatal physical activity among Japanese individuals. We also investigated whether social capital has an extended influence during pregnancy on physical activity 1.5 years after delivery. The cognitive social capital of 3,055 pregnant women in their second trimester was measured using nine questions on a self-administered questionnaire. Each cognitive social capital was classified into two or four groups based on their scores. Physical activity during pregnancy was measured using a validated questionnaire in the second trimester and at 1.5 years after delivery. Participants were classified as having adequate physical activity (≥ 150 min/week) or inadequate physical activity (< 150 min/week) based on the physical activity guidelines during pregnancy. After adjusting for confounders, emotional support was positively associated with the prevalence of adequate prenatal physical activity (P for trend = 0.002). Moreover, there was a positive association between emotional support during pregnancy and the prevalence of adequate physical activity 1.5 years after delivery. Among Japanese women, emotional support during pregnancy was associated with a higher prevalence of adequate prenatal physical activity during pregnancy and at 1.5 years after delivery.

ABSTRACTThis study aimed to clarify the contribution of L-menthol administration to endurande exercise capacity. Thirteen male runners (age, 35.8 ± 7.8 years; peak oxygen uptake, 62.7 ± 6.8 mL kg-1 min-1) ran on treadmills at fixed intensities of their anaerobic thresholds to exhaustion. All participants underwent three trials-water ingestion (W-IG), L-menthol mouth rinsing (M-MR), and L-menthol ingestion (M-IG)- in a random order every 5 min while running. Breathing comfort (BC) was measured immediately after fluid intake. Dyspnea threshold against external inspiratory resistance was examined before and after the running test. The running time with M-IG (1683.9 ± 520.3 s) was longer than that with W-IG (1410.2 ± 465.9 s, effect size [ES] = 0.55). BC with M-IG (2.00 ± 0.74) was higher than that with W-IG (0.42 ± 0.79) at exhaustion (ES > 2.00). The dyspnea threshold after running decreased to 19.2 ± 7.6 cm H2O L-1 s-1 with W-IG, whereas that with M-MR (26.2 ± 6.5 cm H2O L-1 s-1) and M-IG (29.2 ± 2.8 cm H2O L-1 s-1) remained high (p for interaction < 0.001). M-IG facilitated BC during running, improved endurance capacity, and prevented decreases in the dyspnea threshold against external inspiratory resistance after exhaustive running.HighlightsL-menthol ingestion facilitated breathing comfort during high intensity endurance running and improved exhaustive endurance running capacity.Even after exhaustion, L-menthol solution relieved dyspnea sensitivity against external inspiratory resistance.L-menthol ingestion might help athletes improve their endurance running capacity.

Myoblast integrity is essential for skeletal muscle regeneration. Many intracellular proteins are degraded by the proteasome and converted to amino acids by aminopeptidases through the protein degradation pathway. Although we previously reported its importance for myoblast integrity, the involved mechanism remains unclear. In this study, we focused on the reusability of proteolytic products to elucidate the regulatory mechanism of protein synthesis mediated by the proteasome and aminopeptidases. Proteasome inhibition decreased protein synthesis, but recycled-amino acids derived from proteasomal proteolysis were not reused for de novo protein synthesis in C2C12 myoblasts. On the other hand, proteasome and aminopeptidase inhibition decreased intracellular ATP levels in C2C12 myoblasts. Therefore, it was indicated that amino acids produced by these proteolytic systems may be reutilized for ATP production through its metabolism, not for de novo protein synthesis. These findings suggested the proteasome and aminopeptidases are thought to be involved in protein synthesis through intracellular energy production by recycled-amino acid metabolism, thereby maintaining myoblast integrity.

Patients undergoing unilateral orthopedic or neurological rehabilitation have different levels of impairments in the right- or left-dominant hand. However, how handedness and the complexity of the motor task affect motor skill acquisition and its interlimb transfer remains unknown. In the present study, participants performed finger key presses on a numeric keypad at 4 levels of sequence complexities with each hand in a randomized order. Furthermore, they also performed motor sequence practice with the dominant hand to determine its effect on accuracy, reaction time, and movement time. The NASA-TLX at the end of each block of both testing and practice was used to confirm participants' mental workload related to sequence complexity. Both right- and left-handed participants performed the motor sequence task with faster RT when using their right hand. Although participants had increasing RT with increasing sequence complexity, this association was unrelated to handedness. Motor sequence practice produced motor skill acquisition and interlimb transfer indicated by a decreased RT, however, these changes were independent of handedness. Higher sequence complexity was still associated with longer RT after the practice, moreover, both right- and left-handed participants' RT increased with the same magnitude with the increase in sequence complexity. Similar behavioral pattern was observed in MT as in RT. Overall, our RT results may indicate left-hemisphere specialization for motor sequencing tasks, however, neuroimaging studies are needed to support these findings. On the other hand, handedness did not affect motor skill acquisition by the dominant hand or interlimb transfer to the non-dominant hand regardless of task complexity level.

We examined the effects of side-dominance on the laterality of standing stability using ground reaction force, motion capture (MoCap), and EMG data in healthy young adults. We recruited participants with strong right (n = 15) and left (n = 9) hand and leg dominance (side-dominance). They stood on one or two legs on a pair of synchronized force platforms for 50 s with 60 s rest between three randomized stance trials. In addition to 23 CoP-related variables, we also computed six MoCap variables representing each lower-limb joint motion time series. Moreover, 39 time- and frequency-domain features of EMG data from five muscles in three muscle groups were analyzed. Data from the multitude of biosignals converged and revealed concordant patterns: no differences occurred between left- and right-side dominant participants in kinetic, kinematic, or EMG outcomes during bipedal stance. Regarding single leg stance, larger knee but lower ankle joint kinematic values appeared in left vs right-sided participants during non-dominant stance. Left-vs right-sided participants also had lower medial gastrocnemius EMG activation during non-dominant stance. While right-side dominant participants always produced larger values for kinematic data of ankle joint and medial gastrocnemius EMG activation during non-dominant vs dominant unilateral stance, this pattern was the opposite for left-sided participants, showing larger values when standing on their dominant vs non-dominant leg, i.e., participants had a more stable balance when standing on their right leg. Our results suggest that side-dominance affects biomechanical and neuromuscular control strategies during unilateral standing.

BACKGROUND: There is a need to develop strategies that could contribute to the physical and mental preparation of motorsport athletes. A common method used by experienced motorsport athlete physical trainers is flashing light devices to train or assess reactive agility, despite limited evidence. Therefore, in the present study, we determined the effects of a 6-week reactive agility training program using light-based stimuli on the physiological and cognitive abilities of car racing drivers. MATERIALS AND METHODS: The CONSORT guidelines for randomized controlled trial were used. In a single-blinded randomized controlled trial, 24 car racing drivers (EXP, n = 12; CON, n = 12) performed a comprehensive battery of cognitive tests marketed specifically at motorsport athletes from Vienna test system (VTS) at rest or during moderate intensity exercise on a bicycle. Physiological abilities were determined via a maximal incremental cardio-respiratory treadmill test. Baseline and post-intervention tests were performed on three consecutive days. Participants in EXP underwent a 6-week intervention consisting of 60-min training sessions twice a week using the Witty SEM light stimulus. RESULTS: Participants in EXP but not in CON performed some of the VTS cognitive tasks with higher accuracy and/or shorter reaction time after the intervention at rest and during exercise. Car racing drivers performed the STROOP word-reading condition more accurately when the task was performed during the exercise vs. rest, regardless of group. In addition, the intervention induced beneficial changes in peak heart rate (HR), HR at gas exchange threshold, ventilation, and relative maximal oxygen consumption (rVO2 max). In contrast, body mass and fat mass increased, while peak HR and rVO2 max decreased in CON. Finally, participants in EXP improved their reactive agility performance and reaction time throughout the training program. CONCLUSION: Overall, the reactive agility training program using light-based stimuli appeared to be efficient to induce beneficial effects on some physiological and cognitive performance measures; therefore, it may have the potential to contribute to car racing drivers' physical and mental performance.

BACKGROUND: Bruxism is defined as a repetitive masticatory muscle activity, characterized by clenching or grinding of the teeth and/or by bracing or thrusting of the mandible. Although the bruxism etiology can be bidirectionally described with sleep disorders, there are few studies available to understand the association of sleep duration with bruxism behavior in early childhood. METHODS: A dataset of children (n = 90,148) from the Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS) - an ongoing nationwide, prospective birth cohort study - was used to investigate the prospective association of the infant's sleep duration with bruxism behavior, which were acquired using self-reported questionnaire. After multiple imputation of data, the association between sleep duration and bruxism behavior in early childhood was examined using a binomial logistic regression analysis. It was conducted with adjustments for several maternal (e.g., age at delivery and sleep duration) and child-related (e.g., sex and sleep position) variables. RESULTS: The prevalence of bruxism behavior at the ages of two and four were 16.2% and 22.5%, respectively. Using the shortest sleep duration group's participants (≤13 h) as the reference, the odds ratio (95% confidence interval) for prevalence of bruxism behavior decreased with longer sleep duration at one month of age, but not at 36 months of age, after covariate adjustments. Furthermore, in comparison with the impacts between daytime and nighttime sleep, nighttime sleep with longer duration were dominantly associated with bruxism behavior. CONCLUSION: The sleep duration in infant stage, especially during newborn stage was associated with the prevalence of bruxism behavior in children.

PURPOSE: Task complexity could affect acquisition efficiency of motor skills and interlimb transfer; however, how task complexity affects interlimb transfer remains unclear. We hypothesized that left- and right-handed participants may have different interlimb transfer efficiency depending on the task complexity. METHODS: Left-hand (n = 28) and right-hand (n = 28) dominant participants (age = 24.70 ± 4.02 years, male:female = 28:28) performed a finger sequence test with two levels of complexity (simple: one-digit with four fingers vs. complex: two-digit with five fingers) before and after ten trials of 2-min practice each on the same apparatus. The speed and task errors were measured and analyzed. RESULTS: Right-handed participants failed to improve performance on their right hand (non-trained hand) after contralateral left-hand practice in the simple finger sequence task. In contrast, the left-handed participants improved performance on non-trained hands both right and left after contralateral practices. In the complex task, however, both the left- and right-handed participants improved performance on non-trained hands by contralateral practices. CONCLUSION: Our results showed that task complexity of skilled practice gave different effects on interlimb transfer between right- and left-handed subjects. It appears that a certain level of appropriate complexity is necessary to detect inter-limb transfers in motor learning in right-handed subjects.
